Marty Noble

Last week on Wednesday professor Kevin Czerwinski, who teaches at Pace brought in guest speaker Marty Noble. Kevin who teaches introduction to news media is friends and has been in the journalism field with Noble. Kevin brought in Noble to enlighten students in an open discussion to ask anything for the fellow journalist to talk about and give his own perspective. His stories are a reality to the field for students to adhere t and to take in and to expand on the field of journalism. Marty Noble is a retired editor and columnist for mlb.com who initially knew what he wanted to do since his days at Waldwaick High School where he was the editor for. It was at that point Noble knew that this is what he wanted to do and what he was good at. Many complimented his attention to detail and in turn he followed through on his pursuit into the field striving with excellence.

Lyndon State College in Vermont is where Noble would soon attend and would even continue to be involved. Noble wrote and covered for the sports department at his college where he was commended for his work ethic and continual diligence. It would then create opportunities for him to cover stories for the Caledonian record and after , The Herald News.

“I can spell, I have very good grammar skills, I am a motivated reporter, and I love to have a good story,” said Marty Noble.

This is something that has made Noble a good journalists and this is what he focused on while working. Those are things that are able to set journalist apart according to Noble. And with excelling at those things he was able to work his way into covering the New York Mets organization in the major league. Although Noble played basketball growing up as well as in college he has always had an appreciation for the sport of baseball. Noble covered the Mets from 1970 up until 2015 in the year that the Mets made it to the World Series. However covering baseball was a struggle to write stories.

“There is very limited sleep involved with writing stories,” said Noble.

As Noble continued to say that, that was the main struggle with being a reporter. With the various travel arrangements that was time consuming and balancing deadlines it can be very difficult to perform at  his best. For somebody like Noble who has created a foundation in his work ethic and an attrition for his passion on his reporting hated to be wrong to as he emphasized about himself. Noble continued to encourage students that this will continue that drive in you and to always find ways that set you aside and makes you different. Being able to be bilingual and speak to athletes in Spanish to know what is being said is an essential thing to have on your resume. With covering Baseball, many athletes have translators who don’t give you the full effect and or quote that is needed to make the centerpiece of a story sometimes. It is easy to mix up words in that sense. He was able to give his professional and accurate perspective on the field that will help students gain an understanding of how things can work out with diligence, always doing more, and doing things better than its been done before.

Noble embraced the classes participation and questions that dealt with baseball and even outside of baseball such as his love for music, adding on that if he didn’t cover baseball he would’ve wanted to cover rock n roll. Marty Noble will be remembered as he was able to leave his mark on students with his knowledge and company.
